Removal / A careful change of finish

A skin is designed to be removable, but the condition of the original surface still matters. Take care before, during and after removal.
1. Prepare the device
Switch it off, unplug cables and let it cool. Remove detachable accessories where appropriate and support the device on a stable surface. Keep liquids and sharp tools away from the working area.
Identify the vinyl edge, not an edge of the original coating or display protector. This guide concerns decorative exterior skins. It is not a method for removing a folding screen's factory layers.
2. Start at an accessible corner
Gently lift an accessible vinyl edge with your fingernail. Do not dig into the original surface, use a blade or prise up a device panel.
Peel slowly back over the vinyl itself at a shallow angle, using a controlled movement and supporting the device. Avoid a sharp outward tug. If the material tears, start carefully at another accessible edge rather than scraping at the surface.
Stop if the original finish or covering begins to lift, the device bends or removal requires force. Send us the model, finish and a photograph before continuing.
3. Use warmth only when appropriate
Some suitable vinyl can become easier to remove with gentle warmth, but heat is optional and is not appropriate to every device or surface. Follow the supplied removal instructions and the manufacturer's restrictions.
Do not use a heat gun, keep a hairdryer concentrated on one spot or let the device become hot. There is no universal heating timer that is safe for every combination. Do not apply heat to a damaged battery or use it alongside cleaning liquids.
4. Check any remaining adhesive
Some skins come away without visible residue; others can leave adhesive behind. Age, material and conditions can affect the result. Residue alone does not tell you whether the underlying finish is damaged.
Start with the gentlest method suitable for that surface. On a sound surface, a small loose trace may roll away under a light touch. Stop if rubbing marks the finish. Do not scrape, use an abrasive sponge or add an adhesive remover without checking compatibility.
Use a cleaning product only when the device manufacturer approves it for that exact original surface. For example, Apple's cleaning instructions distinguish materials and permitted methods. Approval for one device or surface should not be transferred to another.
Isopropyl alcohol is not a universal next step for a soft-touch covering, painted finish, screen or damaged surface. If residue remains and the approved method is unclear, contact us before experimenting.
5. Inspect before fitting another skin
Make sure the surface is stable, clean and fully dry. A new skin should not be used to hold a peeling coating together or cover a hardware problem.
Do not stack it over the old skin or assume a removed piece can be reused. Follow the installation guide and the instructions for the new product. Clear film uses a separate process.
What if the surface looks different afterwards?
Check under ordinary lighting before cleaning further. A remaining mark might be adhesive, pre-existing wear, a change in the original coating or damage. We cannot identify the cause from the word “mark” alone.
Photograph it and tell us the device, surface, finish, how long the skin was fitted and what was used during removal. Do not keep polishing in an attempt to make every difference disappear.
Removal questions
Do I have to use a hairdryer?
No. Start with the supplied guidance and a slow, controlled peel. Only use gentle warmth where appropriate; if the skin will not release without force, stop and ask for advice.
Can removing a skin damage a device?
It is possible, particularly on damaged, repaired or deteriorating surfaces and delicate coverings. Inspect first, follow the product warning and stop if the original material starts to lift.
Can I reuse the removed skin?
Do not assume so. Removal can stretch the vinyl or contaminate its adhesive. Use a new model-specific piece when changing the finish.
Is this the same as cleaning an installed skin?
No. Removing adhesive from the original device and cleaning a vinyl finish are different jobs. Use our installed-skin aftercare guide for routine cleaning.
